Defining Enzymatic cleaners: Why Enzymes Make The Best Eco-Friendly Products
What are enzymatic cleaners? What makes them the best eco-friendly products? And why are they better than conventional cleaners? At Natura Solutions we’ve been working in the world of enzymatic cleaners for over 30 years, developing industry-leading products out of our South Surrey, BC headquarters in beautiful Canada. We’re thrilled to share the secrets of these amazing cleaners with you as we work towards creating the best sustainable, eco-friendly products available today.
What Are Enzymatic Cleaners?
Enzymatic cleaners are, quite simply, cleaners made from enzymes. Pretty simple, right? Okay, let’s go a little further here. Cleaners made from enzymes work a little differently than conventional cleaning agents. They use a variety of different enzymes to get the job done, and they work by accelerating chemical reactions. (We all remember 7th-grade chemistry, right?) The enzymes used in the best eco-friendly products catalyze reactions based on the substances they come into contact with, usually fats and proteins that make up the stains that the cleaners are formulated to fight.
Enzymes aren’t living organisms themselves, but rather very specific chemical compounds. The reactions they create and accelerate break down stains, dirt, and grime, and in doing so create a neutral compound. Then these compounds simply rinse away. Because they’re neutral, they don’t cause any harm to people, pets, or the environment around us.
Enzymes are found in every living organism, and they play a role in every single function of the human body. You can easily observe how an enzyme works by placing a piece of white bread in your mouth and allowing it to sit until it starts to taste sweet. The enzyme responsible for this is called amylase; it breaks starches down into sugars to make them more usable by the body, and this reaction is so important that it starts as soon as you put food into your mouth! We think enzymes are pretty cool.
What Are Conventional Cleaners?
What’s the big difference between enzymatic cleaners and conventional cleaners then? And why are enzymatic cleaners better? Conventional cleaners rely on harsh detergents and chemicals to get rid of dirt, grime and stains. The problem with this is they’re not particularly eco-friendly, because the residues from these cleaners aren’t good for the environment. When they get into the air, water and soil they can work their way into the air we breathe and our food supply, and these are not chemicals we want to ingest in any way. Some of them have extremely high or low pH levels, making them very acidic or basic and therefore quite harmful to humans.
Additionally, they’re made from non-renewable resources. Most conventional cleaners are made from petroleum-based products, which means they’re basically gas-guzzlers. Enzymatic cleaners are naturally renewable, and naturally non-petroleum based.
With enzymatic cleaners, you still get a powerful cleaning solution, but without the cost to yourself, your family, and the environment. Enzymatic cleaners are non-toxic. The chemical reactions they cause produce neutral components that easily rinse or wash away with water. And they are just as powerful and just as effective as conventional cleaning compounds. We know that enzymatic cleaners make the best eco-friendly cleaning products because they don’t leave behind any harsh chemicals as residues or poison the environment in any way.
